Satisfactory Progress

Federal regulations require that schools establish a Satisfactory Progress requirement establishing maximum number of hours allowable to achieve the degree program sought, and minimum progress requirements for continued financial aid eligibility.

Academic Requirements
All students must maintain Satisfactory Progress and academic good standing in order to be considered for financial aid. In order to meet the standards adopted by Florida State University, the student must:
  • Meet the cumulative grade point requirement in accordance with the
    retention policy of FSU.
  • Have attempted no more than 180 hours toward a four year
    undergraduate degree.
  • Meet the minimum percentage requirement established by federal
    regulation. (see below)
Satisfactory progress is measured by comparing the number of hours you have registered for at any institution with the number of hours you have successfully completed.
Minimum completion rates required:
Freshman (less than 30 hours completed) 65%
Sophomore (30-59 completed hours) 70%
Junior (60-89 completed hours) 75%
Senior (90+ completed hours) 80%

Graduate/Professional students must complete their course of study within 150% of the time frame/credit requirement for their program.

Note: Withdrawals, incompletes, failing grades, repeated classes, and classes not accepted for transfer credit, all count towards the number of hours attempted. Failure to meet the requirements of satisfactory progress and academic good standing will result in the suspension or termination of financial aid eligibility.
Appeal Process - All students who do not meet academic satisfactory progress standards, and are able to document mitigating circumstances such as illness, death in the family, et cetera, may appeal the suspension or termination of financial aid eligibility. A written appeal must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid.

Academic Load - Undergraduate students should be registered for an average of 15 credit hours per term in order to graduate in four years.

Withdrawals - To officially withdraw from Florida State University you must contact the Withdrawal Office, A4300 University Center (850-644-1741). All courses attempted, including withdrawals, will be considered for Satisfactory Progress.

Appeal Process - All students who do not meet academic satisfactory progress standards, and are able to document mitigating circumstances such as illness, death in the family, et cetera, may appeal the suspension or termination of financial aid eligibility. A written appeal must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid with the FSU Satisfactory Progress Appeal form (below). Appeals should include documentation, where available to substantiate the circumstance. To assist in the appeal process for holds related to total number of credits, documentation from the major department on letterhead outlining the number of hours remaining for graduation and an expected graduation date will be helpful in adjudicating the appeal.
